It is easy to forget about the borders, one of the big mistakes I made was fencing in the garden with 2×4 rectangular fence to keep animals out. Fencing in in itself is not bad but I would of course want to plant all the way up to the fence but then have a bad weed problem at the fence, weed eating the fence line on a fence like that is a nightmare. It would be much better to have the fence away from the garden if at all possible, having a border you can walk on at the edge would be nice too.
As stated earlier mulching with wood chips is nice, normally you can get them for free from the power company or other companies that chip trees. Putting it on nice and thick also helps when things get muddy.
Using weed barrier cloth really helps cut down on weeds too. It is nice in that it is fairly easy to move also and normally you can use it for several years.
Having good access to borders and paths is very important, it may seem like a waste of space but working in poor conditions or creating conditions that require lots of maintenance will make you miserable so having good planning will pay off greatly.
